"Any questions thus far?" the co-owner of Cerulean Sky Stables asked as they stepped out of the barn.

"No. Not at the moment," Amanda responded with a bright smile.

The co-owner, Haley, responded simply and began to depart when a shrill neigh resounded around the estate followed by someone shouting. Both women went toward the outdoor arena on the east side of the barn. There they found a trainer just getting up from the ground with the saddle sitting next to him. The horse was almost halfway across the arena throwing the biggest tantrum Amanda had ever seen. From the corner of her eye, she saw Haley rush over to the trainer to help him up. "What happened?" she asked blatantly.

The trainer, a younger male, stood with the owner's help and dusted himself off. "Same as always. Put the damn saddle on him and he about trampled me into the ground!"

Amanda watched as the stallion jumped into the air and let out a ferocious buck. As he landed, he wheeled around and galloped along the fence line, head and tail held high.

"Might wanna tell your father that this one may be a lost cause," the trainer continued.

Haley seemed to grumble to herself as she, too, watched the stallion gallivant about the arena. "I'll place an ad for him tonight on a few sites and call around. Maybe someone will-"

"How much do you want for him?" Amanda blurted out, shocking all three of them into silence. Recovering from her own shock, she continued. "I'd pay for his board and I would train him in my off hours...and any damages would come from my own account."

Haley considered her for a moment. "He's only a yearling and has only gotten as far as halter breaking." She seemed to be thinking out loud rather than talking to Amanda. "However, he is from Paige Stud's Coyote Killer..." She seemed to consider a few more thoughts before she turned back to Amanda. "I'll accept three thousand for him; if you board him here, he'll be kept in the stallion barn for half the cost and you will train him, as you stated, on your off hours. We'll work out a contract for breeding, showing, and the like in due time."

As Amanda nodded in response, she felt thrilled and sick all at once. Rivet had been gone for all of three and a half weeks and now she was getting another horse. The stallion finally stopped his escapade and realized that he had an audience. It was at that moment that Amanda noticed that this stallion had the same surreal blue eyes as Rivet. A knot welled up in her throat as she remembered the first time she met that beautiful mare. Haley took the halter from the trainer and placed it in Amanda's hands before she walked away. The stallion shook his mane and looked off into the distance. Amanda realized that even though Rivet had been beautifully trained, it had not been by her own hand and, after training countless horses for friends, family, and fellow horsemen, this colt would be her's to train. She clicked her tongue to get the horse's attention; he turned to her and nodded his head, almost in greeting.

"Well, hello there," she said with a bright smile as she approached him with a bit of a carrot from her pocket to offer to the massive colt. He greedily accepted it and munch on it contentedly, Amanda slipped the halter on his bi-colored head. "I've got a lot to teach you and, I'm sure, there's a lot for you to teach me." She gently pet him between his two azure eyes, still smiling brightly. "And maybe you'll be able to help me achieve an impossible dream."

The stallion snorted an shook his mane, realizing that he had to follow her lead with the halter on him. She patted his neck as she led him from the arena to his stall then hurried to the office to begin working out a contract.

Background

Personality: Song Dog is full of fiery spirit with seemingly limitless energy; had he been left with the herd, he would have been an excellent lead stallion. He seems to have no intention of slowing his pace anytime soon; he seems to enjoy getting a kick out of being a problem horse for every person he comes across, until the reins are given to the one person he sees as his leader: Amanda. Even with a more dominant character than Amanda, he will fight and he will fight hard but, as soon as he comes into contact with Amanda, he becomes very docile and obedient. There is rarely a struggle between the two of them and, when there is, its never anything dramatic. Their bond is incredibly strong even though there is no magic involved between them. It is to the point that if Song Dog is hurt or in trouble, he will simply turn to Amanda to help fix the problem. Song Dog prefers to be kept alone rather than with horses; he will chase off lower ranking horses and will not hesitate to fight other stallions. Strangely, Song Dog does not mind the company of dogs and has made a good friend with Rebel and Annie. Amanda has encouraged people to offer him peppermints to get on his better side, but it seems that people are more afraid of getting their hand bitten off than getting on good terms with him.

History: Song Dog's story begins with his sire, who ran with the Paige Stud's Golden Valley free roaming herd of Quarter Horses deemed Coyote Killer. Before Coyote Killer was captured, it seems that had bred to a mare, bringing about a colt that looks almost exactly like him. During their round up, Song Dog Was spotted amongst the herd and was instantly believed to be a colt of Coyote Killer's. Feisty and stubborn as his sire, Song Dog led both horse and rider on a long and dangerous run before he was captured. From there, he transported to North Carolina to be checked out by a vet and to learn to accept haltering and leading.

In March, he was placed in an auction at Paige Stud with five other horses that had experienced his journey. Song Dog was the last to be sold and, unfortunately, there were not many takers. The only bidder was Johnathan Shepard, co-owner of a large cattle ranch in Missouri. Song Dog was then transported to Missouri where attempts at training him were proving to be far more difficult than they could handle. Embarrassed and unable to find another way, Johnathan called his daughter, Haley, to see if she would be interested in training him and gave her the option that, if she could not train the stallion, she would be permitted to sell him. More than happy with a new challenge, Haley accepted and had Song Dog transported to Cerulean Sky Stables, where she began to train him. Song Dog continued to resist training until Haley put her foot down and made him realize that she was leader and not him. After doing so, Song Dog became a little less wild. He began to accept leading, the bridle and having strange things around him. Before Haley could get him to accept the saddle, a large influx of new staff, horses, boarders, and trainees came in, forcing Haley to have to reassign Song Dog to another trainer. Realizing that Haley was gone and no longer his leader, Song Dog picked up on all of his bad habits again and refused to saddled.

In the end, Haley decided to sell the stallion and, just as she did, a new trainer was more than happy to purchase him before Haley could even place an ad for the stallion. They came up with a contract and agreed to each other's conditions. In the last three years, Song Dog has still remained as wild as before but more placid around his owner. Song Dog, as of a few months ago, has learned to accept a rider and is well on his way to a show career.
